As the world turns its eyes to South Africa in anticipation of this year’s World Cup, most will overlook a truly simple message, that soccer has the ability to unite and transcend.  The documentary film, Pelada, which will be featured at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival, follows 4 young filmmakers on a journey across the globe as they explore the hidden side of soccer away from the stadiums, corporate sponsors and soccer superstars.

Pelada’s genesis lies with Luke Boughen and Gwendolyn Oxenham, two former college soccer stars who didn’t quite make it to the pros.  Not quite ready to hang up their jerseys, Boughen and Oxenham, a graduate of Duke’s English and Documentary Studies program, teamed up with former classmates Ryan White and Rebekah Fergusson to create an Endless Summer style documentary about soccer.

Filmed in 25 countries over a 2 year period, Pelada follows Boughen and Oxenham as they travel the world playing pick up games with everyone from inmates in a Bolivian prison to moonshine brewers in Kenya to Muslim women in Iran who play in secret. Showcasing the game in its purest form, Pelada takes a compelling look at the universality of the game and its transcendence across social boundaries and cultural divides.

With film festival season on the horizon, the filmmakers, still short the funding needed to finish Pelada, recently reconnected with another former classmate, Tommy Swanhaus. Swanhaus, founder of TheFreeStyleLife.com, a web-based media outlet for artists and their work, saw an opportunity to partner with the Pelada team and provide them with a solution to spread awareness about the film.

“Lots of great projects don’t make it to the Big Screen, or any screen for that matter,” said Swanhaus.  “I started TheFreeStyleLife.com to support and bring international awareness to these quality projects, making sure these filmmakers get their story told. Officials are saying that this is the worst Earthquake to hit Haiti for over 200 years, and hospitals are not equipped to deal with the amount of injuries brought on by this amount of destruction.

The Earthquake hit 10 miles East of the highly populated capital Port-au-Prince destroying the UN Headquarters, the Presidential Palace and other important buildings.  People lined the streets with no where to go, and offered their efforts to dig people trapped under rubble with their bare hands.

A truly horrible and devastating disaster to hit such an impoverished and poor country, Haiti will be needed all the help it can get.  Take the time to look into ways that you can help today.

Lady Gaga is set to appear on Oprah, this Friday Jan 15th, according to executive producer Sheri Salata’s Twitter.

Casey Johnson was known for her wild antics, hard partying ways, and most recently an engagement to famous bi-sexual reality TV and MySpace star Tila Tequila.

Casey Johnson is said to have suffered from diabetes since she was a kid.  She has also had severe battles with both drugs and alcohol, causing major speculation in what contributed to her death.

Tila Tequila seems to be basking in all the attention and fame from this tragedy, immediately twittering that Johnson had died and calling the cops and reporters to her house when Johnson’s friends Nicky Hilton and Bijou Phillips showed up to gather Johnson’s dogs and personal belongings.

Johnson was 30.

So sad that yet another young life has been taken to soon.  Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Kate Hudson and A-Rod seem to have fizzled as A-Rod was seen flirting it up with another hot blonde in Miami this weekend.  According to sources close to the couple Kate’s desire to always be in front of the camera was the cause of their split.

Sources are also reporting that Jake Gyllenhall and Reese Witherspoon have called it quits claiming that the relationship just “fizzled” but they are trying to be private about it because of Reese’s kids.  Rumors have been circulating for quite some time now that these two split before thanksgiving, yet their press reps keep insisting that they are still together.  I guess time will tell….

Seems like a pretty lousy time for couples to be breaking up!  Where is your holiday spirit people??
